Guide to Luxury Activewear Fabrics That Perform

A great gym set should never leave you thinking about your gym set. No tugging at the waistband during squats, no see-through panic under bright studio lights, no leggings that feel amazing for ten minutes then lose their shape. This guide to luxury activewear fabrics is about knowing what sits behind that confident, sculpted feeling - so you can choose pieces that work hard, flatter harder and still look polished after the workout.

Luxury in activewear is not simply a label or a higher price point. It is the difference you feel in stretch recovery, opacity, softness, breathability and the way a fabric holds your shape. The best fabric for a power session is not always the same as the best fabric for a long-haul flight or a slow Sunday coffee run. Knowing the difference makes building a wardrobe from the gym to the street far easier.

Guide to luxury activewear fabrics: what makes fabric premium?

Premium activewear fabrics balance several competing demands. They need enough compression to feel supportive, enough stretch to move naturally and enough recovery to return to their original shape. They also need to cope with sweat, washing and repeated wear without becoming baggy, thin or dull.

The most flattering pieces are rarely made from a single fibre. Instead, luxury performance fabrics are engineered blends, often pairing a durable base fibre with elastane for four-way stretch. Construction matters just as much as composition. A denser knit generally gives better coverage and a more sculpting finish, while a brushed surface can create that irresistibly soft, second-skin feel.

Fabric is also only one part of the equation. A high-rise waistband, strategically placed seams and a well-cut gusset all influence whether leggings feel secure and look sleek. Still, the right material gives those design details the foundation they need to perform.

Supplex: the cotton-soft performance favourite

Supplex is a premium nylon-based performance fabric designed to offer the soft, familiar hand-feel of cotton with the benefits of technical activewear. It feels smooth against the skin, dries faster than traditional cotton and is made for movement. For women who want gym wear to feel luxurious rather than overly synthetic, it is a standout choice.

It is especially suited to leggings, fitted tops and matching sets where comfort and a clean silhouette matter equally. A quality Supplex blend has a supportive, matte finish that looks elevated rather than shiny, making it an easy choice for pilates, strength training and off-duty styling.

The trade-off is that not every soft fabric is automatically high compression. If your priority is a held-in, body-contouring feel for intense training, look for Supplex with a higher elastane content and a dense construction. Toned Totty uses Supplex in performance-led pieces for precisely that blend of comfort, confidence and sculpting support.

Nylon: smooth, strong and beautifully sculpting

Nylon is one of the most common fibres in premium activewear for good reason. It is strong, lightweight, smooth and highly resistant to abrasion. In a quality blend, it creates leggings that glide on easily, feel sleek against the skin and retain their shape through regular wear.

Nylon is often the hero fabric behind that compressed, snatched finish. It can support a tummy-flattening waistband and a body-hugging fit without feeling stiff, particularly when blended with the right amount of elastane. It is a brilliant choice for gym sessions, runs and any workout where you want your outfit to stay exactly where it belongs.

Look closely at the finish. Some nylon fabrics have a subtle sheen, which can look fashion-forward in a jumpsuit or jacket but may highlight texture more than a matte fabric. For everyday black leggings, a soft matte nylon blend tends to feel more forgiving and effortlessly premium.

Why elastane matters

Elastane, also known as Lycra or spandex, is the stretch fibre that gives activewear its flexibility and recovery. You will rarely see it used alone. It is blended into nylon, polyester or Supplex to create fabric that stretches with your body and then springs back instead of sagging at the knees or seat.

More elastane does not always mean better leggings. Too much can create an overly tight feel or reduce breathability. The sweet spot depends on the garment: a sculpting legging needs dependable stretch and recovery, while a relaxed fitness top may need only a little for shape retention. What matters is how the fabric performs on the body, not just the percentage on the label.

Polyester: high-performance practicality with a fashion edge

Polyester is exceptionally durable, quick-drying and effective at handling sweat, which makes it a natural choice for high-energy training. Modern premium polyester is far removed from the stiff, plasticky fabric you may remember. It can be soft, lightweight and finished with a refined, almost peachy touch.

It works particularly well in breathable workout tops, lightweight layers, jackets and sports bras. If you train outdoors, travel often or love a set that dries quickly after washing, polyester blends offer serious practical appeal. They are also excellent at holding colour, so bold seasonal shades and crisp black finishes stay looking fresh.

The consideration is odour retention. Polyester can hold on to body oils more readily than some alternatives if it is not washed properly. Avoid heavy fabric softener, which can coat technical fibres and affect their ability to wick moisture. A cool wash after wear and proper air drying will help your pieces stay fresher for longer.

The truth about squatproof coverage

Squatproof is one of those claims that should mean something. It is not merely about dark fabric or thick fabric. True squatproof confidence comes from the blend, knit density, fit and stretch capacity working together.

A low-quality fabric can become sheer when stretched, especially across the hips and seat. A premium legging uses enough yarn density to maintain coverage, while elastane allows movement without pulling the fabric too thin. A well-designed gusset also reduces strain in the most important area.

To check a pair at home, try them on in natural light and perform a deep squat or lunge. The waistband should stay secure, the fabric should remain opaque and you should not have to keep adjusting the fit. If you can focus on your form instead of your leggings, that is the test passed.

Soft-touch versus compression: choose for your workout

The softest activewear is not always the most supportive, and the most compressive fabric is not always what you want for a gentle day. Choosing by activity helps you get more from every piece.

For yoga, pilates and lower-impact training, choose buttery-soft fabrics with flexible four-way stretch. They should move without restriction and feel comfortable when you are seated, folded or on the mat. For lifting, HIIT and running, look for firmer compression, squatproof density and moisture management. These fabrics tend to feel more secure during quick changes of direction and high-repetition movement.

For athleisure, consider the finish as much as the function. Matte, sculpting fabrics and clean lines make leggings feel intentional with an oversized shirt, bomber jacket or longline coat. A polished co-ord can take you from a morning class to errands without looking like you forgot to change.

How to make luxury activewear last

Beautiful fabric deserves a little care. Turn leggings and sports bras inside out before washing to protect the outer finish. Wash on a cool, gentle cycle with similar colours, and skip fabric softener where possible. Heat is the enemy of elastane, so air dry rather than using a tumble dryer.

Avoid washing activewear with towels, denim or anything abrasive. Friction can roughen the surface and cause pilling over time. It is also worth rotating your favourite sets instead of wearing the same pair every session. Giving elastic fibres time to recover helps maintain that sculpted fit.

Your best activewear should make getting dressed feel like part of the motivation. Choose fabric that matches the way you move, the support you love and the confidence you want to carry beyond the changing room. When the fit feels secure and the finish looks elevated, you are ready for whatever the day has planned.
